A Promenade in TIME
Arima Hanshinkan Modernism
Arima Hanshinkan Modernism

Arima in a Retro ride
Master the art of bending and molding Time. Driving a charming classic car along the alleys of the small town is indeed a guilty pleasure. While we encourage strolling and “flaner” around, we can’t resist to suggest a slow and short ride that will instantly take you into a time slip.

A date with Arima Geiko
One of the best ways to make some unforgettable memories in Japan. A morning stroll, an afternoon tea or a shamisen evening with the Geiko of Arima whose history dates from earlier than that of Kyoto Geisha. Arima Geiko were oracles before becoming Yuna, and then entertainers as Geiko. Enjoy an exclusive private time where leisure and entertainment intertwine.

A unique Kimono experience
Enjoy the unique style of the Hanshinkan Modernism culture that is still imbedded in Arima Onsen. Immerse yourself even more in the town’s scenery. Try on a Kimono with the unique Hanshinkan modernism flair which blends western and eastern aesthetics in a very effortless and elegant way. You belong!
Arima Onsen is located between Kobe and Osaka, an area otherwise known as “Hanshinkan” which is a very important region that repeatedly flourished with unique cultures during different periods of Japan’s history. During the Meiji period when Japan opened its doors to the west, the Hanshinkan area was one of the first to blend east and west cultures. In addition, the Tokyo Kanto earthquake contributed to the immigration of many men of letters to this area which again became a unique cultural melting pot. Arima became not just the oldest hot-spring area in Japan but also the first hot-spring area to officially open its doors to foreign visitors. During that time Arima Sansoh Goshobessho which was then a Temple metamorphosed into the first hotel for foreigners in Arima. We encourage our visitors to enjoy the unique style of the Hanshinkan Modernism culture still imbedded in the town of Arima Onsen.

Experience a Dance Performance by Arima Geisha

A peaceful ritual: Shakyo and Shabutsu
Dive into inner peace through two sacred practices at the Nenbutsuji, one of the oldest temples in town. Shakyo, the art of hand-copying Buddhist sutras, and Shabutsu, the meditative tracing of Buddha’s image. Both practices offer a serene, contemplative experience that allows you to find calm in your mind and connect deeply with your inner self. A great experience for adults and children.

Fucha cuisine
Experience the harmony of Fucha Ryōri at Onsen-ji Temple, prepared by the head monk, who also leads Fucha cuisine nationwide. This traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, introduced by Chinese monks in the 17th century, celebrates seasonal, plant-based ingredients shared among guests. Nourish both body and soul while embracing the principles of gratitude and mindful eating."

Zazen meditation
If you are an early bird, you can enjoy another way of serenity and calmness. A one-on-one zazen meditation session at the Onsen-ji temple will change your inner world. The magic of healing and calmness is within you but sometimes an environment or a ritual can facilitate the experience of it. And when you open your eyes, check the ceilings and the buddha statue. You may have a special hint.
Arima Onsen, Japan's oldest recorded hot spring, is renowned not only for its miraculous thermal waters scattered across its hills and back alleys, but also for its Tera Machi, or temple town, at its heart. Emperors, lords, priests, and scholars have visited for centuries, seeking wellness, mindfulness, and creativity by combining temple meditation with the healing powers of the hot springs. Many stayed for weeks or even months to detox, reset, and heal both body and soul. The ritual of Toji, practiced at Arima Onsen, goes beyond mere soaking—it's a holistic journey of 'becoming one with the hot-spring town,' balancing the energies of water, fire, earth, metal, and wood to harmonize body and soul. Toji is truly the art of immersing oneself in the rhythms of the hot-spring town.

Tsutsumigataki Waterfall for Poets
Mt. Rokko is renowned for its unique waters, from mineral-rich hot springs that heal the body to soft, pure water perfect for sake brewing. Just a 15-minute walk from the heart of Arima lies the enchanting Tsutsumigataki Waterfall, named for the rhythmic "pon! pon!" sound it makes, like the beat of a Japanese drum as the water strikes a hollow rock. This waterfall has inspired many poets, including the famous Saigyō, who, after resting by the falls, received divine guidance to perfect a waka poem that has been cherished since the 12th century. The scene of poets encountering the gods of poetry at Tsutsumigataki is even depicted in famous Noh theater plays still performed today—perhaps you are next!

A romanticist’s Hike
If you view Arima Onsen from above, you’ll witness rising steam, flowing streams, hidden alleys, and hiking trails stretching across Rokko Mountain. For hiking enthusiasts, Arima offers several routes to explore.
After a relaxing morning bath and an energizing breakfast, take a hike to the top of the mountain, discover the unique flora of the area, and savor some freshly brewed coffee during breaks. The 400-year-old Totoya Michi route, an ancient trail once used to transport fresh fish served in the local Kaiseki cuisine to delight visiting emperors and lords, will lead you to the summit of Mt. Rokko, where panoramic views and a beautiful botanical garden await. The way back to Arima can be either by hiking or by riding the scenic ropeway. You will return by noon, just in time to enjoy a soothing bath and a delicious meal, leaving you refreshed and relaxed.
